6/30/24 - Major Hurricane Beryl
Beryl is the second strongest June hurricane on record with winds of 130 mph which makes it a category 4 on the Saffir Simpson scale and may get stronger before it passes through the Windward Islands on Monday. This is a very dangerous situation unfolding for the Windward Islands and please use the rest of today to rush preparations to completion as impacts will begin late tonight.
The hurricane will continue traveling west-northwest through the Caribbean early next week and will finally begin to weaken later Tuesday into Wednesday. The latest NHC forecast has a second landfall on the Yucatán Peninsula Friday morning as a category one storm. The storm will begin encountering some upper-level wind shear across the central and western Caribbean, which thankfully will help the system weaken some before it reaches the Yucatan.
There is a little more model agreement that the high-pressure ridge across the southern United States may begin to weaken some by next weekend which could allow Beryl to make a northwest turn once it reaches the Gulf of Mexico, which could potentially put the Gulf coast of Mexico or the Gulf coast of Texas/Louisiana at risk.
We want to stress, that this is still just a little over a week out and we do not know for sure yet what the final outcome will be. I anticipate we will know a lot more over the next three days or so. If you are a resident or have interests in Belize, Mexico, or the western Gulf Coast, please continue to pay very close attention to this hurricane. We will have another update as conditions warrant.
