A large and complex area of low pressure is expected to develop near the Yucatan Peninsula and the northwestern Caribbean Sea in a few days, partially related to the remnants of Hurricane Agatha from the eastern Pacific. This system is forecast to move slowly eastward or northeastward and gradual development is possible by the latter part of this week. If development occurs, we do NOT expect a strong system in the Gulf as it would likely be lopsided with the rain and wind mainly on the east side of the low, which is typical for June systems in the Gulf. The environment does NOT appear to be conducive at this time for a strong storm or hurricane in the gulf. The biggest impact by far would be heavy rain and possible flash flooding near and along the track. Interests in the NW Caribbean, Cuba and Florida should monitor the progress of this system this week. Stay tuned for updates.
If something develops, it will likely track east-northeast towards Cuba and Florida.
