Tropical Storm Barry has formed over the northern Gulf of Mexico as the organization of the storm gets better and winds increase to 40 mph. The low pressure will slowly move to the west/northwest the next 24-36 hours before taking a northerly turn and moving toward the Louisiana coast by Friday night. Barry is then forecast to make landfall as a low-end Category 1 hurricane Saturday morning on Louisiana.

A Tropical Storm Warning is now in effect for the Louisiana coast from the Mouth of the Pearl River to Morgan City. A Storm Surge Warning is now in effect for the Louisiana coast from the Mouth of the Atchafalaya River to Shell Beach. A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for the Mississippi coast east of the Mouth of the Pearl River to the Mississippi/Alabama border, and for Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas including metropolitan New Orleans. A Storm Surge Watch is now in effect for the Mississippi coast from the Mouth of the Pearl River to the Mississippi/Alabama border.

Rainfall will be the biggest threat posed by Barry, with over 2 feet of rain possible in parts of the lower Mississippi River Valley. Storm surge of up to 3-6 feet is also possible along parts of the Louisiana coast. Damaging winds, rip currents, and rough surf will also be threats.
