7/5/24 - Increasing Threat For the Entire TX Coast From Beryl

Beryl has weakened a bit into a category 1 hurricane and made landfall along the Yucatan Peninsula south of Cozumel early this morning. It is forecast to weaken to a tropical storm later today due to land interaction and then emerge over the Gulf of Mexico late tonight.

7/5/24 11AM EDT NHC forecast has the entire TX coast within the cone. A north turn means more impacts to a larger portion of eastern Texas.

Conditions will be favorable for Beryl to regain hurricane or even major hurricane intensity once in the Gulf of Mexico. The latest NHC forecast calls for Beryl to reach 85 mph before reaching Texas. Yes, you read that right the NHC now calls for landfall along the Texas coast near or just north of Brownsville, TX early Monday morning. We see data that supports cat 2 or 3 intensity in the gulf just before landfall. Some model guidance is even further north, closer to the middle and upper TX Gulf Coast. The hurricane center states more shifts north with the track are likely today. The entire Texas coast should be on alert as impacts will be possible over a good portion of the TX coastline.

Residents from Brownsville to Port O’Connor should begin making preparations for a possible hurricane impact and areas north of there (including the Houston area) should also watch the forecast closely and think about preparations should the track come closer to SE TX. Lots to watch this weekend. One thing for sure is that Beryl will bring winds, storm surge and several inches of rain to a good part of the Texas coast Sunday into Monday. Tropical storm and/or hurricane watches may be issued later today for the Texas coast by the NHC.

We will have another update later today.
